The Water Innovation Centre (WIC)
Water is essential for virtually all life on earth. Yet it remains a critically-stressed global resource. That is why there is an urgent need to link markets and environmental technologies with community-based, basin management.
Not constrained by jurisdictional boundaries or limited mandates, the Institute is uniquely positioned and qualified to establish an integrated basin strategy for the benefit of all concerned—including Manitoba Water Stewardship, Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Board, International Joint Commission, Environment Canada and Agriculture Canada.
IISD has excellent relationships with all these and more. This kind of collaboration is designed to produce public health, economic and climate change adaptation benefits and opportunities such as more reliable runoff for hydro power production, reduced flooding impacts, resilience to drought and improved recreation and tourism.
Our Capital Campaign is Bridging this Gap through the Work of the
Water Innovation Centre (WIC)—One of our new Centres of Excellence
Ultimately, the lessons the WIC team learns in the Lake Winnipeg basin will be adapted and shared worldwide—from Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico in North America to Lake Chad and Lake Victoria in Africa and from Lake Balaton in Europe to Lake Taihu in China.
The Water Innovation Centre's Inaugural Project is
Canada's #1 Water Hot Spot—the Lake Winnipeg Basin
